BMW's M Concept Neue Klasse previews the 2027 electric M3 - quad motors, 800V and over 100kWh. Here is what is expected, and why the S58 is not going anywhere.
BMW has finally shown its hand. The M Concept Neue Klasse broke cover in June 2026 ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and returned to Monterey Car Week that August. It is a concept in name only — this is the electric M3, arriving in 2027 under the internal code ZA0.
For anyone who has spent the last five years building an S58, the obvious question is not how fast it is. It is what happens to the car you already own. The short answer: less than you would think.
What BMW actually showed
The concept sits on the Neue Klasse platform, sharing its bones with the i3 sedan but reworked heavily enough to earn the M badge. The arches are pushed out, the shark nose is sharper, and a V-shaped depression runs down the bonnet into a clear split between the kidneys and the enlarged lower intakes.
The front bumper is the detail people keep coming back to. BMW calls it “trimaran-style” and says it was inspired by high-speed sailing boats — and unlike most concept-car language, it has a job. It feeds the cooling an 800-volt drivetrain needs when it is asked to perform repeatedly rather than once.
Expected power: 1,000hp and beyond
Expected output is around 1,000hp (750kW), and that is the conservative read.

BMW has not published a final number, but 1,000hp+ is where the reporting has settled — which would make this comfortably the most powerful M car ever built. For context, a G80 M3 Competition leaves the factory with 503hp. The electric M3 is expected to double it.
Acceleration should be limited by tyres rather than power. A sub-3-second 0–100 is a near certainty, and low-2s is realistic.
Four motors, zero differentials
This is what genuinely changes how the car drives. The M Concept uses a quad-motor BMW M eDrive setup — one motor per wheel. No centre differential, no rear diff, no mechanical linkage deciding where torque goes.
Torque at each corner is controlled individually and electronically, and the front axle can decouple entirely for a pure rear-wheel-drive mode.
Underneath sits a battery of more than 100kWh, built from sixth-generation cylindrical cells and integrated structurally into both axles. The cells are tuned for power delivery rather than range — both feeding the motors and taking charge back in.
The “Heart of Joy”
Four independent motors are only as good as the brain deciding what each one does. BMW’s answer is a central control unit it calls the Heart of Joy, processing vehicle data around ten times faster than current BMW ECUs and folding powertrain and chassis control into one stack.
In practice it can adjust torque and braking at each wheel far quicker than a conventional system reacting to a slide after it has already started.
What can you actually modify on an electric M?
Straight answer: the entire forced-induction aftermarket does not apply. No downpipes, no cat-backs, no charge pipes, turbo inlets or intakes. Those parts exist because a combustion engine is an air pump with restrictions in the way. An electric motor has none of them.
The Heart of Joy makes software tuning harder too — where an S58 responds to a flash, the electric M3’s power and chassis behaviour live in one tightly integrated, secured unit.
What will matter on these cars: tyres and brakes (two tonnes and four-figure torque all goes through the contact patch), suspension, aero and weight reduction, and cooling for repeat performance runs. A different discipline, not a dead one — but not the one most M owners are currently playing.
The petrol M3 is not being replaced
This is the detail that gets lost in the headlines, and it is the most important one.
The electric ZA0 is not the successor to the G80. The current M3 bows out in 2027, and a proper petrol replacement — the G84 — follows in 2028, running a mild-hybrid twin-turbo 3.0-litre S58 inline-six with output expected above 523hp. BMW has confirmed the inline-six stays.
The two will be sold alongside each other. BMW is adding an electric M3, not swapping one for the other.
What the S58 still makes today
Here is why none of this changes your build. The S58 responds harder to bolt-ons than almost anything else BMW has produced.

Figures are indicative and depend on fuel, tune and conditions. Hardware alone will not deliver them — the gains come when the parts are supported by a calibration.
The path starts with breathing. A catless downpipe with heat shield removes the single biggest restriction after the turbos, and pairs naturally with an equal length Z pipe — our most popular S58 part by a distance. A performance air intake and high flow charge pipes clean up what the factory left conservative, and a titanium valved cat-back gives you a car whose volume you control from a remote.
Why now matters
When the G84 arrives as a mild-hybrid in 2028, the G80, G82 and G87 become the last M3, M4 and M2 to run the S58 without electrical assistance. That is not marketing — it is simply where the model line splits.
If you have been putting off building yours, the case has not weakened. It has quietly got stronger.
